Made for those who love surfing, by two guys who love surfing, is the Southern Mentawai Outpost (SMO). This is ultimate surf destination for eco-conscious travellers looking to experience the best Mentawai surf trip that is environmentally ethical.

Hosted by Ian and Eric, who both fell in love with surfing from a very young age, and found themselves exploring Indonesia and connecting over surfing, is this idyllic paradise surf camp.

Located in the southern Mentawai region of Indonesia, SMO sits right on the beach, steps away from Thunders surf break. Said to be the most consistent wave in the region - apparently even when it’s small, it still produces many make-able barrels.

Aside from Thunders, there are numerous other barrelling and fun waves in the area. To name a few are; Thunder Box, Rags Right and Left, Buddhas, and in the spirit of exploratory surfing and adventure, even a bunch of secret spots that have yet to be wholly understood by those who do not live in the area. With Ian and Eric as your guides, you will be sure to score fun waves during your stay  at SMO.

With 5 huts and 2 beds in each, SMO hosts an intimate number of 10 guests maximum at any given time. Made entirely from bamboo and completely screened in, these huts are well ventilated, earthquake-proof and eco friendly. Furthermore, the entire facility is run on solar power, has it’s own freshwater well, and plans are also being finalised to create an organic vegetable garden in order to provide fresh and sustainable vegetables on the menu. SMO also does not condone or support unsustainable fishing practices, and only takes in seafood that has been sustainably caught by staff members or guests.

At SMO, you will have a choice of staying 7, 9, 12 or 14 nights per trip. This is due to the flight schedule in and out of Padang, Sumatra, as well as the schedule of the fast ferries. Make sure to liaise with the resort for pick up and drop off schedules as this is a very remote area of Indonesia with limited public transport available.

Once you are at the resort, you will be able to adventure to many surf spots, experience different kinds of reef breaks, and surf waves that will be filmed by an on-site photographer and videographer so that you’ll be able to show your friends back home how much you scored. What more could you ask for?

So what are you waiting for? Come and discover paradise that is the Southern Mentawai Outpost!
