Some would tell you that surfing is the most exhilarating, fun and worthwhile sport that exists. Others might tell you that it is a lot of effort for minimal reward. Well, this is your opportunity to figure that out for yourself.

If you’re visiting Fuerteventura, there is no better place to try surfing for the first time.

Breaking across long, white sand beaches and abundant tapas lounges, this Spanish island has the most perfect waves for beginner surfers and very first surf lessons.

As with any new skill you’re learning to pick up, surfing takes patience and practice. So, here’s a little run down on what to pack, the best surf schools, and what to expect from your first surf lesson in Fuerteventura.

What to bring

The utmost essentials to pack on your day out surfing in Fuerteventura are;

  • Sunscreen and/or zinc to protect yourself from the brilliant (yet harmful if soaked in for long) rays of the sun.
  • A water bottle to stay hydrated as the sun, salt and exercise can leave you feeling rather parched.
  • And of course, a patient and positive vibe because at the end of the day, to surf is to play with what nature provides - some days will be better than others and you will improve with time. Be easy on yourself and remember that surfing is fun!
  • A towel, sarong, or jumper for after the surf session can also be a good idea as you might like to dry up and get warm.

What to expect from your first surf lesson

If you’re a total beginner, we’ve got you covered. Surfintrip Academy and Protest Surf School are the two best rated surf schools on TripAdvisor that will be sure to give you exceptional guidance and the best surf experience possible.

Whichever surf school you choose to go with, they will provide pick up and drop off services between your accommodation, their store, and the surf break of the day. Based around El Cotillo and Corralejo, the day starts with choosing the right break accompanied by the best conditions. With many things to consider such as swell, wind, tide and crowd factors, you might get lucky and surf at the first spot you check. However, you might also end up checking a few spots with your instructor before you find the best one. This is an integral part of the surfing lifestyle, and will probably take about 4 hours of the day, including the surf.

Surf boards, wetsuits and any other surf equipment will be provided for you, so all you have to do is show up!

Both surf schools focus on a maximum group size of 6 students, ensuring that you feel safe and comfortable in and out of the water. Instructors will provide guidance on land before entering the water with you, and they will push you onto your first waves. Taking your first surf lesson in a group is a super fun way to learn surfing and progress with other beginner surfers. Together, you can all share the stoke of surfing!

So what are you waiting for? Get your sunscreen on and take a surf lesson in Fuerteventura. ✧
