Whether you’re looking to take your first lesson, are after some beginner surf coaching, or just wanting to rent a board and paddle out yourself, Bali has the largest choice of surf schools and board rentals you can imagine.

With waves scattered all along it’s coastline, Bali also offers the most amount of waves catering to different levels of surfing in a close knit and easily accessible region of Indonesia.

Though a lot of the surf spots in Bali can be good for beginners if the swell is small, there are a few spots that are specifically ideal for novice surfers who want to build confidence and get comfortable with the basics of surfing.

If you’re an absolute beginner, Kuta Beach will be the best place for you to go. Farther up the west coast from Kuta is Kedungu. Breaking over a rocky and sandy bottom, the wave at Kedungu is amazing for learning. As it is a little ways out of town, the black sand shores of Kedungu are slightly harder to get to, but you will be rewarded with quiet line ups and a serene volcanic setting.

If you’re checking out the Uluwatu Bukit region of Bali, Thomas Beach and Baby Padang will be your no.1 choice for beginner waves. Generally small and tame, these reef breaks are frequented by beginners and long boarders alike. Here, you’ll be surfing over crystal clear waters, colourful reef, and against a backdrop of lush jungle and towering limestone cliffs.

And finally, on the east coast of Bali, lies the wave of Baby Reef in Sanur. Located just a little boat ride away from Mertasari Beach, Baby Reef is a soft and mellow wave that is perfect for learning, and most usually less busy than Uluwatu and the west coast. You’ll easily be able to find board rentals, instructors for hire, and surf taxis available all day on the beach.
